FIDE Chess Master Nelson Castaneda of the New Britain Chess Club goes 3-0 and
wins the chess center's First Anniv USCF Chess Tournament on May 6.
Eight USCF players competed in the Chess Center First Anniv Open
held May 6 in Coventry CT.
Nelson Castaneda, a national senior master from New Britain CT,
won clear first with a perfect 3-0 score.
Derek Meredith, Immad Sadiq, and Gary Cote each finished 2-1 .
One master, one expert, and four "Class A" players. The average
rating for all 8 players is 1825 making it the strongest tournament
ever held in Coventry.

Matthew Shirvell and Daniel Zhou tied for first place, each with perfect 3-0 scores. A 2-way tie for 3rd place resulted when Dmitri Efimov and James Grindley each finished 2-0. A total of ten players competed in the 3 round swiss.
David Herscovici won first place of the "Venus de Milo" tournament held April 8 in Coventry with a perfect 3-0 score.
A 3-way tie for 2nd: Nelson Castaneda, Joe Bihlmeyer, and Roger Bessette each finished with 2-1 scores.
We wish to thank Mark Denihan, who volunteered work all day long. Rob Roy was TD.
Several drenching rainstorms in the prior week, together with the spring thaw, caused the basement to get an inch of water.
Luckily, the tournament room was on high ground and thus not affected. The garage got emptied out and became the skittles room. Click for Photos
We usually provide a complimentary lunch, but with all the work to remove 12 wet rugs and cleaning out the garage, we had no time to prepare.
We all chipped in and got pizza from the new "Wicked Slice" in Coventry. The pizza won high approval so we may do this at future events.

Report on the East Conn Chess Open held March 11 in Coventry.
Joe Bihlmeyer won with a perfect 3-0 score. Gary Cote from Norwich won 2nd place with 2 wins and a draw. Nine players came to play in the 3 round Swiss.
Rob Roy served as houseman for rounds 2 and 3, winning both games. Thanks to Elizabeth who allowed us into her home and cooked us ziti and meatballs.
Thanks to assistant host Mark Denihan, who did many various tasks all day long. Thanks to those who made voluntary contributions towards the lunch food. The rounds progress better when players don't need to leave to fetch lunch.
We had 3 players from the New Britain Chess Club, 2 players from the Norwich Chess Club, and 4 new players. Thanks to each of the players for driving in to play in my tournament.
Nelson Castaneda of New Britain won the Norwich Chess Open with a perfect 3-0 score. Matthew Faille of Waterbury and Alan Winslow of Groton shared 2nd place, each with two wins and a draw.
