CONNECTICUT CHESS MAGAZINE # 183, Dec 8

GAME OF THE WEEK   by Alan Lasser

Now that I’m an old player and I make a lot more mistakes than I used to, my opponents usually have some reason to be optimistic when they take my pawns. Not this time, it was poison.

BOB CYR’S COMMENTARY

Well, our trip down memory lane has come to an end. I hope that you enjoyed reading about the fun and exciting times that happened in our club throughout the last twelve months. We certainly had many fond memories that occurred in 2019 that we live on in the years to come.

Some of the most memorable highlights included:

·        Prawn sacrifice team won best team name at USATE

·        FM Richard Bauer won his first club championship since tying with FM Nelson Castaneda in 2007

·        FM Nelson Castaneda won the July Knockout event

·        The adult/scholastic team opening lessons were a success

We are also happy to report that our friend Geatano Bompastore is doing much better as he continues to regain his strength and mobility in his legs after being in a severe automobile accident coming home from the Summer Open 2018. He attended the Summer Open 2019, and his spirts remain high and upbeat. We wish him the best of health as he continues to recover.

Martin Garcia is also making progress after suffering a debilitating stroke last year. He speech his much clearer, and his spirits are high. We wish him the best of health as he continues to recuperate.

Friends, it is time to sign off and say adios! Cheers to such a warm and welcoming family. On behalf of the club officers, merry Christmas. May your new year be blessed with health, happiness, and peace.

CONNECTICUT CHESS MAGAZINE # 182

GAME OF THE WEEK   by Alan Lasser
I suppose it’s not news when the World Champion wins an ending.  Recently on this page we saw an ending where he had the two minor pieces against the rook and two good pawns, of course he won.
This game he has the other side, but he has the rook and two bad pawns against the two minor pieces, of course he wins again.
So the lesson is that even if you think you have the advantage, do not to play either side of this ending against Magnus Carlsen.

GAME OF THE WEEK   by Alan Lasser

Here’s an ending rarely seen; on move sixty, it’s two rooks and a bishop versus a knight, a bishop, and five pawns. The computer thinks Black was losing after move fifty-three, when he still had one last pawn and White had six; but there was still one last chance to save the game.
