MARK BOURQUE WINS 54th NBCC SUMMER OPEN

On a seasonably warm and pleasant day on the last Sunday of the month, fifty chess enthusiasts gathered at the beautiful Wickham Park in Manchester to compete in our club’s annual Summer Open Chess Championship. It takes a lot of volunteerism to ensure the success of this heritage event.

The following people deserve recognition for making the 54th Summer Open one for the record books. First, we sincerely thank our tournament directors, Suhas Kodali and Doug Fiske, for their outstanding work that they did to direct this event so seamlessly.

Second, we thank our food and beverage crew, Chef Mario Guevara-Rodriguez and Gert Hilhorst for making sure the participants had plenty to eat and drink. We also thank Rob Roy, who sent out many advertisements about this event via his Connecticut Chess magazine blasts. We also want to thank Suhas for ordering the lovely trophies and for bringing in the club sets and boards.

Of historical note, Kyle Triplett, one of our newest members and president of the Central Connecticut State University Chess Club, took home clear first place in the Under 1619 section, making this his first major win in a club tournament. Overall, it was a delightful day of food, family, and fun, and we look forward to seeing you next year! by Bob Cyr

President's Message

Our 2018-2019 membership years comes to a close. We finish the year with 101 members, the 3rd time in the last 5 years we have broken the 100 mark!

The NBCC officers officially start their terms, with Norman Burtness, President; Suhas Kodali, Vice President; Mario Guevara-Rodriguez, Secretary; and David Herscovici, Treasurer.

Following his election last June, Laurent Lafosse was unable to fulfill the duties as Treasurer due to a change in work commitments, and David Herscovici was appointed to take his place.

I again want to thank Gert Hilhorst for his work for the last 4+ years as treasurer, taking over admirably after the passing of long-time treasurer Andris Strazdins.

On a personal note, I had the pleasure of seeing Danny Rozovsky last weekend when he was in town. He has graduated from Berkeley with a degree in math, and has started working for Universal Tennis, where he is designing a Tennis Rating software to replace the current ranking system. Danny was responsible for getting me back into playing chess seriously after a 30 yrs absence when as a 2237-rated 9th grader, he came to my chess club at school and promptly destroyed me. We then played regularly and he showed me a whole new world of chess strategy I had never seen before.

54th NBCC Summer Open Report

Congratulations to Mark Bourque for edging out Joe Hricko on tie-breaks to take home the 1st place trophy.

Kyle Triplett won the U1619 section and Ethan Shemo went 5-0 in the U919 section to take 1st place.

It was nice to see Gaetano Bompastore at the Open. It was just a year ago coming home from this event that he had his terrible accident. He is still in a wheel chair, but was in good spirits.

We all wish you, Gaetano, the best for your continued recovery.

Pal Benko Dies at Age 91

Benko's Great Sacrifice

GAME OF THE WEEK   by Alan Lasser

Grandmaster Pal Benko died last week, he was an American chess hero, renowned for turning over his hard-earned spot in the 1970 interzonals to Bobby Fischer. The movie title had it wrong, it wasn’t a pawn sacrifice, it was the sacrifice of a grandmaster that allowed Fischer into championship cycle and his eventual world title.
My own Benko story is also from 1970, when our grateful chess nation was beginning to reward him. I was an under-employed eighteen year old B-player when I heard that there were going to be chess jobs in the Catskills. A group of well-heeled chess investors had the brilliant idea of buying the Flagler, a venerable hotel in the Borscht Belt, and turning it into a retirement home for old chess players. The hotel staff would include young chess players who, in addition to doing the grunt work of running the hotel, would make themselves available to the retirees whenever one of them wanted to play a game. It sounded like a dream job to me.
About 30 young chess players showed up at the hotel seeking this employment, most of them were hot-shot New Yorkers. The jobs would go to the highest rated players, and the ones who performed best in the simultaneous against Benko, who was slated to be the hotel's resident grandmaster. Talk about big stakes, did you ever play a chess game with your whole future on the line? I was in the bottom-half of the ratings, my only chance of a job was a good performance in the simul.
The highest rated hopeful was young expert Danny Shapiro(he grew up to be an over 2400 master), and he was the last one to finish. Wouldn’t you know it, the grandmaster made me play a more pieces than pawns position. Somehow I made it to the final five, but that meant I had less time to think and I crumbled in the complications. I hoped I had played well enough to snag a job, but for reasons unknown to me, the hotel purchase fell through, and the chess playing gigs that Pal Benko and I wanted never materialized.
My tribute was the coining of “Benko-files”. He is the only chess player to have his name on an opening and a file.

GAME OF THE WEEK by Alan Lasser

GAME OF THE WEEK   by Alan Lasser

After move twenty the computer says I am down by a huge 16.73, even though the material on the board is actually equal.  When my opponent didn’t find that good move, his advantage immediately slipped to 0.10 and soon my queen looked all the way down the long diagonal and I even found the follow-up, a happy knight check.  Unfortunately, I used most of my remaining time trying to hunt down his king when the actual key to victory was to exchange queens and promote the c pawn.  The White king proved unmateable but, in the excitement, I forgot that my own king was in check;  which he obligingly captured to end the game.

GOING BACK IN TIME  by Bob Cyr

Let's take our time machine and revisit the prior winners of the New Britain Summer Open Chess Championship. Enjoy and safe travels!

Who will be the 2019 winners - ONLY DAYS LEFT TO FIND OUT. I can't predict the future (no one can with 100% certainty), so this is your chance of making history at this year's Summer Open at the beautiful Wickham Park in Manchester.

The weather is expected to be a high of 79, with very refreshing levels of humidity, and mostly sunny skies and a light breeze from the northwest. Weather forecasting is one of my hobbies as you can see!

The 2019 Continental Open in Sturbridge, Mass. was won by Chinese Grandmaster Jianchao Zhou with a score of 7 out of 9. The Premier section had no less than 12 GM's and 7 IM's participating. Because it was a nine-round event title norms were attainable and Eugene Yanayt of Cali. achieved an IM norm. No players from Connecticut contended in the Premier, but in the U2100 Derek Meredith tied for first, Nathan Chang tied for first in U1900, Colin Wheeler tied for 3rd in U1700, Jack Clayton finished fourth in the U1250.  Final standings and Rating report

EXPERT BIHLMEYER WINS IN COVENTRY

I won my 15th chess tournament in Coventry, at the Rob Roy Chess Center. I have played 30 times since it opened in 2016, winning half the time I show up! While I only gained 4 rating points, up is up, and money is money! Now This has become my go-to place for rated games, as I can get in 36 rated games per year.

Compare this to the New Britain Chess Club, which meets every Tuesday, and only offers 34 rated games in 2019 - unless their format changes!

The Fairfield County Chess Club offers over 300 rated games per year, but I have lost my ability to play chess in games less than 1 hour. Every Saturday FCCC offers a 3 game quad, game in 45, and almost every Sunday a 3 game quad, game in 30.

Continental Chess offers a weekend tournament every few months in CT. There are a few smaller venues which offer a few tournaments a year, which are often not published. So there is a lot of chess in CT, and this doesn't even include MA or NY.

GOING BACK IN TIME  by Bob Cyr

On a warm and gorgeous, sunny August 26, the club held its grandest event of 2012 - the annual New Britain Summer Open Chess Championship. This year’s tournament was held at Wickham Park in Manchester.

In the years following our move from the New Britain Quartette Club (our former weekly meeting place), the officers have been trying to find a new permanent location to hold our club’s blockbuster summer outing.

In 2011 and 2010, two different country clubs were the venues of this tournament. And even though their facilities were beautiful, our players were not afforded many opportunities to play their games outside at these locations, which was a major attraction when these events were held under the QC pavilion.

This year, however, the vivid memories of those open-air events at the QC from 2007-2009, with a barbecue lunch and casual time during rounds to play frisbee or engage in social interaction, were brought back to life as sixty-one players (third-highest turnout for an event held by the club) throughout the Nutmeg State and beyond gathered under the pavilion at Wickham Park to be a part of one of the most successful tournaments in the club’s history.

The credit for finding such a gem of a venue goes to USCF NM Derek Meredith. Keeping with the tradition of this tournament, a BBQ lunch was included.

And who else better to cater the lunch for our hungry crew other than NBCC Chef Kevin Zimmerman, Marie Juergens, and Mitch Daniels. This professional food staff prepared all of the famous summertime culinary delights from cheeseburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, antipasto salad, fresh garden salad, and baked beans, and they provided plenty of soda and water throughout the afternoon.

After lunch, our players were treated to cake to celebrate the marriage of our members Mike Fries and Bethany Sonstrom on September 1. Thanks to member Laurent Lafosse for his fine job in selecting the cake and delivering it to the event.

One of main reasons the tournament was so successful this year was attributed to Gert Hilhorst. As a result of his efforts to recruit members from the Simsbury Library Chess Club, a historic twenty-four scholastic (under 18) players participated in our tournament, shattering the old record of sixteen established at the “Andy Strazdins Over/Under 15 Quick Chess Tournament” in 2010.

The youth alone represented an impressive forty percent of the total turnout. In addition, I want to extend appreciation to Rob Roy, former Connecticut State Chess Association president, for advertising our tournament on numerous social media websites, and for taking photos for his website.

Our tournament directors that day, Doug Fiske and Bob Kozlowski, also deserve credit for doing a superb job with the handling of on-site registrations, making the pairings, being available for questions, and awarding of the prizes. The following people also deserve recognition for making this tournament one for the NBCC record books: Andy Strazdins, Brian Kosnoff, and Jerry Aiyathurai.

It is obvious that an event of this magnitude requires many hours of planning, but our volunteer staff was up to the challenge. Because of their hard work and dedication, we had another fantastic Summer Open.

Before closing, I do want to mention that a significant milestone occurred for FM Nelson Castaneda at this event. For tying for first place with FM Richard Bauer, Nelson has earned an honorable place, with Arkadijs Strazdins and Rick, in NBCC history for attaining twenty ties or wins for first place (even if non-cash prizes were awarded) in our club’s major tournaments.

So, friends, if you have never been a part of this extraordinary chess experience, or played in this event in recent years and could not this year, I really hope that you can join us at this event in 2019. I guarantee you will not want to miss it!

GAME OF THE WEEK   by Alan Lasser

Maybe the plan only works at rapid speed, but in this game the queen was no match against the two pieces and strong center pawns.  If that wasn’t challenging enough, the final portion of the game has more pieces than pawns.
