Chess is very popular right now in Bridgeport CT

Hey Everyone,

We have expanded a lot recently with our projects in Bridgeport! These are very exciting times so I wanted to share with you what we are doing. Everything that you read below is free for the kids who participate.

1. We have around 25 Bridgeport girls set to start practicing soccer with us twice a week on Mondays and Fridays from 6pm to 7:30pm at Roosevelt School with two of our professional soccer coaches. It's the same girls that we have been working with for a year. They beat Ridgefield in a match at the end of Fall when we were only practicing once a week so now that we will be practicing twice a week the girls should improve even more.

2. We are averaging around 12 students in each of our online chess classes for Bridgeport kids ages 10 and under. We host the classes Monday through Friday from 5pm to 6pm through Zoom.  We also have an all girls chess class that meets on Mondays from 6pm to 7pm online that averages around 8 girls.

3. We are working with LITT (Library Initiative for Teens and Tweens) and the Bridgeport Library, providing weekly chess classes and scrimmages for Bridgeport kids ages 11-18. Recently, this group faced off with the Ridgefield Library and South Norwalk Library chess programs and beat them. They also tied Joel Barlow High School.

4. We are tutoring Math and English during school hours at Roosevelt School, Curial School and St Ann School. Our coaches go in and work with kids in a small group format.

5. We are teaching chess three times a week during school hours at St Ann School. This will surely create a chess culture there.

6. We are hosting a weekly after school, financial literacy class at Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport.

7. We are hosting an after school chess class at Roosevelt School and Curiale school taught by one of our students in our LITT/Bridgeport Library chess program. This is cool because we trained the player and now we are paying the player to go coach other Bridgeport kids.

8. We are paying for the tuition of a high schooler at Kolbe Cathedral.

9. We are hosting homework help after school classes at Roosevelt School and Curiale School multiple days a week.

Respectfully,

Coach Dan

    BIG Chess Programs In Bridgeport by NBCC Players

    to JithuDanCarterSheshJithya, bcc: me

    Good Morning Chess Friends,

    I hope you all are doing well. I just want to inform you of all the amazing things we have been doing in Bridgeport, CT. Starbuck Foundation(a non-profit that provides free chess lessons and other programs to Bridgeport Youth) started a new online chess program on Jan 3rd: FREE chess programs 5 days(Mon-Fri) a week from 5-6pm for 10 years and under. We use chess.com and Zoom to teach these amazing talents. I'm happy to say, we have over 90 kids in our mailing list with an average of 15 students in any class.

    Besides this, we also have  GIRLS ONLY, chess class for 10 years and under every Monday from 6-7pm. As you all know, there aren't a lot of female chess players and we are trying to make a difference!

    These classes are caught by Professional DIG Coaches including NBCC chess players: Carter Clayton, Shesh Bhudabatti, and Jithya Sajeevan.

    Carter, Shesh, and Jithya have been doing an AMAZING job teaching these kids and I'm hearing a lot of good compliments from parents about their coaching.

    Thirdly, we also have a chess class for ages 11-18. They practice twice a week with other DIG Coaches.

    Our goal is to make Bridgeport, the next chess city town in the next 5 years.  Not only Bridgeport players are learning the game, but also applying many of the strategy skills in their real life. Some players like Sebastian Lopez, who is in our 11-18 Bridgeport Chess Program, achieved a 1300 rating within 8 months of playing chess!

    Thank you for taking the time to read this. CT will be known for chess in a few years! ♟

    Respectfully,

    This Week’s News Items:

    • WCH Thematic

    • Christmas Party Next Tuesday (Dec. 21) at 6 PM

    • Upcoming Events

    • Blitz XXVI Results

    • Game of the Year - 2021

    • Training - WCH Thematic

    • Saturday Study Group - 5 pm (Different Link)

    ====================================

    WCH Thematic

    This Tuesday will be the second week of the WCH Thematic tournament. We will review the remaining games of the World Championship and play out positions in a G/10;d/5 tournament. Spoiler alert - Magnus Carlsen retained his World Championship crown.

    Last week, we played out the first four positions of Nelson’s thematic positions. With 3.5/4, Suhas Kodali took first, and in second with 3/4 was a four-way tie: Mario Guevara-Rodriguez, Norman Burtness, and Nelson Castaneda.

    ====================================

    Christmas Party

    Next Tuesday (Dec. 21) is our Christmas Party! Doors will be open by 6 and food will be arriving at 6:15. We have a mix of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes from Fitzgerald’s Foods. Come early, bring your family and join us in our celebrations. Afterward, we will have our annual bullet tournament. It’s a pure 1+0, where everyone plays everyone else for yearly bragging rights.

    If you have any time in between, you can peruse our fabulous historian’s review of the year. The annual newsletter is also available on the club website.

    ====================================

    Upcoming Events

    We will close out the year with an unrated tournament. Starting next year, we will have a qualifying tournament for the Club Championship, followed by our most popular tournament of the year - the NBCC Championship.

    Events are posted on the club calendar on the club website - newbritainchessclub.com

    ====================================

    Blitz XXVI Results

    Congrats to NM Derek Meredith for winning the top section with 8/10. In second place was FM Nelson Castaneda with 7.5/10. In the next section, congrats to Lisa Smith for winning with 9/10pts. In a tie for second were Sumanyu Nandecha and Vishnu Mukku with 7/10 pts.

    Many thanks to Lisa Smith for sharing her first-place prize with the 2nd place winners in her section. It’s a nice gesture to our young players, who won $10 each, rather than sharing the 2nd place $5 prize.

    ====================================

    Game of the Year

    FM Rick Bauer will be announcing the Game of the Year prize at the Christmas Party. Many games were submitted this year, from Oktoberfest, Summer Open, and the Club Championship. You can preview the games analyzed by Rick on Lichess.

    ====================================

    In-person Lecture - NM Suhas Kodali

    Tuesday 12/14 - 6:15pm

    Suhas will wrap up the World Championship and Ian Nepomniatchi’s characteristic collapse after Game 6.

    ====================================

    Saturday Study Group at 5pm

    The Saturday Study group will be experimenting with their schedule. It will start at 5pm and run for three hours. The first hour will be general, where one of the regulars will give a club-like demo.  The second hour will be "practice games" or a "practice game."  These are very informal and geared towards learning.  We are experimenting with group games involving input from everyone for BOTH sides. The third hour will review games from participants, from the club, if and when we get them, the internet, or from history and their analysis.
