CONNECTICUT STATE CHESS ASSOC

The 2019 Stamford Open was won by Connecticut's top 14-year-old FM Max Lu who tied for first with GM John Fedorowicz, IM Justin Sarkar, FM Jason Liang and Lev Paciorkowski, all from New York state.

In the U2010 section Nathan Chang took (CT) clear first, the U1710 was won by Sinclair Kennedy-Nolle (NY) and the U1310 saw a tie for first by Nishant Jain (CT) and Kenneth Crump (NY).

Congratulations to Wesley So. He won 2019 Fischer-Random Championship. He defeated Magnus Carlsen in the finals, which left a lot of chess fans wondering how could that happen. I thought it was Magnus’s excellent endgames and superior speed chess that made him the regular Chess Champion. Here So tests Carlsen’s calculation ability in one of those difficult more-pieces-than-pawns positions worthy of determining a champion in any game.

None of my computer software is written to analyze Fischer-Random Chess. The programs can be forced to analyze from the starting position, but as soon as anyone castles Fischer-Random style they grind to a halt over what would be an illegal move in chess. The only way I can show you a game is to start after both sides have castled, which in this game is move eight.

If you are setting up a board without using the pgn in this email, begin with White king on g1, queen on a1, rooks on d1 and f1, knights on c3 and g3, bishops on d3 and c1, and pawns on a2, b3, c4, d4, e3, f2, g2, and h2.
