3-way tie for first
Rick Bauer, Joe Bihlmeyer, and Jon Smucker, ended up in a 3-way tie for first place at the 2019 Constitution State Open held May 18 at the Coventry Chess Club. Each finished with two wins and a draw.
The event attracted five new players who have never played in Coventry. Four from our Top 12 loyal players: Joe Bihlmeyer, Hayes Goodman, Larry Lafosse, and Art Nagel.
It was a gorgeous sunny day; the first nice Saturday since October. Rick Bauer donated $20. Joe Bihlmeyer and Jon Smucker donated $10 each. The donations enabled the tournament to finish in the black. Rob Roy volunteered as organizer and director. Thank you very much.
Our next event is June 22, the 2019 Coventry Summer Open
The Coventry Chess Club meets one Saturday per month at Mill Brook Place, 1267 Main St (Rt. 31). It is very comfortable, well-lit, quiet, air-conditioned, and is accessible to wheelchairs.
Please come play chess with us. We get together one Saturday per month, to provide a tournament for USCF players.
We also welcome players who are unable to pay to enter the tournament. Everyone is invited to come and be a spectator, plus they can also play non-tournament games.
Rob can setup free USCF-Rated matches. You must be a current USCF member.
We arrive at 9 AM and stay until 6 PM. Bring whatever equipment you have; we have loaner boards, chessmen, and clocks.

GAME OF THE WEEK, by Alan Lasser
The tripled pawns win! This is the eighth time that this counter-intuitive phenomena has appeared in this chess column. Every once in a while the tripled pawns appear to be good strategy. In this game they don’t arrive on the board until move twenty-four, but they control the center and pave the way to resignation.
