REPORT - 2019 NUTMEG STATE OPEN - Aug 10

National chess expert Joseph Bihlmeyer of Durham won the 2019 Nutmeg State Open with a perfect 3-0 score.

Lisa Smith and Art Nagel shared second place.  Rob Roy served as TD.

Bihlmeyer defeated 14-year-old Hayes Goodman from Rhode Island in the final round.

Eight players enrolled in the tournament, in spite of it being a gorgeous sunny day outside when many are at family picnics and vacations.

Bihlmeyer donated $60, and kept the tournament from losing money for the club.

We are fortunate "Pizza on Main" is a mere 222 feet away from our meeting place; Mill Brook Place on Main St. Coventry.

Many of our players went for lunch at the new "Pizza on Main" restaurant, and the feedback is that they have excellent food and quick service.

Bihlmeyer is conducting chess lectures every Tuesday 6:15 pm - 7:00 pm at the New Britain Chess Club.

The NBCC is sponsoring the 54th NBCC Summer Open on Sunday August 25 at Wickham Park in Manchester CT.

The next tournament in Coventry is the 2019 CHARTER OAK OPEN to be held on Saturday Sept. 28.

Also the 10th Hartford Open in Windsor Locks on Sept. 20-22.

GAME OF THE WEEK   by Alan Lasser

Last week I mistakenly credited Eric Schiller with naming the Frankenstein-Dracula variation;  it was Irish master Tim Harding who first called it that, Schiller’s book just popularized the name.

The best names in chess are not reserved for the openings.  Previously in this chess column I have admitted to rooting for the Russian GM Andre Deviatkin and the Norwegian candidate-master, Odd Martin Guttulsrud.  Here’s another player I want on the wall chart, the Belgian candidate-master Matthias De Weird.

GOING BACK IN TIME  by Bob Cyr

Years ago, but not in the too far distant past, the New Britain Chess Club of Connecticut used to hold many more simultaneous chess exhibitions. It was during the Strazdins' administration when each master would be allowed one simul per year rather than merely give the club champion of that year that distinct honor. I guess simuls today don't attract many players as they used.

Richard Bauer, one of Connecticut's luminaries, gave a simul at the club on August 9 nearly twenty-five years ago. As many of you know, FM Mr. Bauer is the current club champion. Here is a brief biography that I wrote about the legendary Master Bauer when we held his tributary event about six or seven years back.

Following his biography, you will also find the beautifully typed results by Arkadijs Strazdins of the August 9 simul that Bauer gave in 1994. On a lighter note, Mr. Strazdins would usually offer the master (any master) a draw half way through the simul, in good spirits. But, as noted below, Mr. Strazdins lost his queen! Of course, Mr. Strazdins resigned graciously. Maybe he had too much beer to drink that night!

Ha ha! I lost to FM Mr. Bauer that evening as well, so I did not feel so bad. By the way, Rick has now earned thirty wins or ties for first place in classical time-controlled events in the club.

Your friend in chess and time,

Bob "Doc C." Cyr

CHESS COLUMNS FROM THE PAST   by Rob Roy

1977 - 2000, Rob Roy wrote 1,300 Waterbury Sunday Republican chess columns.  The column helped his Waterbury Chess Club to become very successful.

Clerks at the newspaper office were the ones who re-typed hard-copy into the newspaper system, they made many typos with chess notation. All future editions of Connecticut Chess Magazine will feature a different column.
