With 5-0 score Beatrice Low has won Connecticut State Girls' Championship for the fourth time in five years.

Shesh Budhabhatti (winner of 2018) and Haneesha Atkuri tied for second, Shesh clinching the qualification spot to the NNCT on tiebreakers.

Irving A. Robbins Middle School from Farmington won the team trophy.

It seems everyone has some off-beat line ready against the Sicilian players. If you fear your opponent has better book knowledge of the main lines, you can try 2.c3, the Smith-Morra, the currently popular 2.b3, the Closed Sicilian, or the Kopec System; all of which have a better reputation than the Wing Gambit(although, after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 a6, 3.b4 is a favorable transposition).

Another unusual approach is the 6.a4 played here. Everyone knows the basic Sicilian plan, play a6 and b5 and attack on the queenside; if Black is really lucky, White will castle in it. 6.a4 prevents that easy queenside advance, but it doesn’t affect the center so perhaps it is not a real attempt to press for an advantage; but if it wasn’t for moves like a4, rook lifts wouldn’t be possible.

I am looking for help financing the "Coventry Chess USCF Tournaments" and the "Connecticut Chess Magazine".  So far my only revenue source has been from tournament entry fees. Our first tournament was May 2016, and we've held one per month ever since.

We've had only 10 that generated extra revenue over current expenses. We had 9 tournaments that broke-even, and 27 tournaments that lost money.  I am hundreds in the red.  I doubt I will ever see that money again.

We have 3 tournaments coming up: Feb 22, Mar 21, and Apr 18, after which our USCF program in Coventry will have been in operation for four complete years, with 49 tournaments completed. It takes a long time to build up a chess program.

I give acknowledgement to Joe Bihlmeyer, without whom our program would have failed back in 2018.  Joe is an asset to us in many ways. Everybody is friends with Joe. He is generous with giving chess advice to anyone.  Joe has also kept us alive financially, donating hundreds of dollars to us.

Connecticut Chess Magazine began March 2010, and so far has had 192,000 visitors.  I give acknowledgement to Alan Lasser, writing "Game of the Week" column for many years.   We are a bona-fide magazine because of his chess column, without it CCM would be merely announcements and reports.

I include the New Britain Chess Club, Conn State Chess Assoc., Play More Chess Academy in Hamden, and West Hartford Scholastics by Norman Burtness.  I also want to acknowledge all the new officers of the state chess association. IM Jan Van de Mortel is doing a great job as president.

There are several CSCA events coming up:

1. 2020 CT Grade Championship will take place on Saturday February 8 at the Roosevelt School in Bridgeport.
2. CSCA Regional Scholastic Chess Tournament in southern Connecticut on February 29 or March 1 (more details will be announced soon).
3. CT K-12 State Championship will take place on March 7 at Manchester High School (more details will be announced soon).

JORDAN GROFF WINS 2020 GREATER HARTFORD OPEN

 
Coventry's Mill Brook Place hosted the 2020 Greater Hartford Open on Jan 18.

Jordan Groff finished as clear winner, with 3-0 score, winning $160.

A 5-way tie for 2nd place (2-1 scores); Abe Mondal, Lisa Smith,

Kevin Corteville, Nitish Heston, and Brandon Ahl.  Each won $16.

Lisa Smith donated her prize towards free snacks we provide to players.

We thank Jordan; he arrived early and set up all the tables and chairs.

Thanks to everyone for helping put away the tables and chairs, and for

helping to carry club equipment back and forth to my car.

The tournament attracted 12 players, six of which are new to the USCF.

Organizer and tournament director Rob Roy fills in as houseman so no player

sits out a round due to no opponent availlable.

Ice-cold waters, cookies, chips, dip, baby carrots, Chex Mix, orange juice,

bananas, oranges, apples. This same snack menu will be at our next

tournament, Feb 22, the 2020 EASTERN CONNECTICUT OPEN.

I sort of feel sorry for the local masters; the most fun they can have is playing the other masters, and there aren’t a lot chess masters around to play, even at the nearby tournaments. Every once in a while one of them will show up at a local chess club to see if there are any other strong players there. Last time at the Lilly Library Club, this apparently out of practice master only beat me two out of three. This time the club player didn’t even suspect he was playing a master, maybe that’s why he put up a good fight.

There are several CSCA events coming up:

1. 2020 Greenwich City Scholastic Championship & CSCA NNGP Southern Leg will take place on Sunday January 26 at the Greenwich Academy.
2. 2020 CT Grade Championship will take place on Saturday February 8 at the Roosevelt School in Bridgeport.
3. CSCA Regional Scholastic Chess Tournament in southern Connecticut on February 29 or March 1 (more details will be announced soon).
4. CT K-12 State Championship will take place on March 7 at Manchester High School (more details will be announced soon).

   Although I am a registered Independent, surely this is the dream of every chess player, this must be our wildest fantasy, this is the best thing that could possibly happen for the game of chess(#2-Magnus Carlsen marries Taylor Swift).  Imagine that in the 2020 Presidential Debates, when Trump makes the mistake of bragging about what a great commander he is or how he is smarter than everyone else, Trump’s opponent may counter sharply with, “Well Mr. President, we know from the Mueller Report that you have an interest in the game of chess.  Why don’t we play a game of chess right now, right here on stage in front of the American people, and let them see which one of us is really smarter and a better commander.”  Instantly a chess set is wheeled onstage.  What a moment for chess, it could be the most dramatic game ever played!  Is five-minute okay, Mr. President?  

   Don’t expect him to wuss out and refuse, it would be a disaster in the polls to back down.  Don’t expect him to go to the bathroom and pull out Stockfish, that’s probably not allowed under the debate rules.  He is a smart guy, no doubt Trump has foreseen this possibility and he is already practicing his game online.  Do you recognize his handle?

There are several CSCA events coming up:

1. 2020 CT Girls' Championship will take place on Sunday January 19 at the Play More Chess Academy in Hamden.
2. 2020 Greenwich City Scholastic Championship & CSCA NNGP Southern Leg will take place on Sunday January 26 at the Greenwich Academy.
3. 2020 CT Grade Championship will take place on Saturday February 8 at the Roosevelt School in Bridgeport.
4. CSCA Regional Scholastic Chess Tournament in southern Connecticut on February 29 or March 1 (more details will be announced soon).
5. CT K-12 State Championship will take place on March 7 at Manchester High School (more details will be announced soon).

There are several CSCA events coming up:

1. 2020 CT Girls' Championship will take place on Sunday January 19 at the Play More Chess Academy in Hamden.
2. 2020 Greenwich City Scholastic Championship & CSCA NNGP Southern Leg will take place on Sunday January 26 at the Greenwich Academy.
3. 2020 CT Grade Championship will take place on Saturday February 8 at the Roosevelt School in Bridgeport.
4. CSCA Regional Scholastic Chess Tournament in southern Connecticut on February 29 or March 1 (more details will be announced soon).
5. CT K-12 State Championship will take place on March 7 at Manchester High School (more details will be announced soon).
