2018 CONNECTICUT YANKEE OPEN - JULY 14, SAT., 10 am

I expect many chess players for our chess tournament this Saturday.

Our tournament on this weekend in 2017 attracted 16 players. FIDE master Nelson Castaneda won clear first.

Joe Bihlmeyer and Mark Bourque tied for 2nd.

I am happy to be expanding to our bigger and better venue.

I have posted instructions for those showing up at the old location by mistake.

For lunch Rob will coordinate a group order from Wicked Slice, who will deliver to us after round one at 12:45.

Please order and pay to Rob prior to 11:30 deadline.

Within walking distance are 5 restaurants open for lunch.

Phoenix, Bidwell, Subway, Panda Garden, and Lakeview.

Round two will start between 1:15 and 1:30.

I try my best to keep things simple. Entry fee is $30 cash only, per player.

Registration is between 10:00 and 10:15. No advance entries, no byes.

I am using my cellphone now, it is 860 986-8372.

Stafford Springs Chess Club moves to the Stafford Community Center, on Thursday July 19.

The SSCC has met almost 100 times since starting up Oct 2016.  Sometimes the club will conduct a USCF-Rated Quick-Chess tournament, it depends on who shows up.

A typical turnout for the club is about a dozen players, and it is growing, hence their move to bigger and better facilities.  There will be no meeting July 12.

Stafford Springs is a satellite community for both Hartford Conn. and Springfield Mass.  Chess masters and experts from both cities enjoy this weekly club.

ROB ROY, SENIOR TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

Special thanks to Derek Meredith, who persuaded 5 fellow New Britain Chess Club players to come play in Coventry.

Bob Cyr, CT's chess historian, donated a dozen Dunkin Donuts. For lunch we had Angus Burgers and corn on the cob.

Next tournament is July 14 at new location; Mill Brook Place, 1267 Main St. Coventry.

Since starting up Coventry Chess Club in May 2016, we've had 103 different players.  We are confident our chess program will continue to thrive.

Mill Brook Place is a brand new meeting hall that fits 70 people. We will have plenty of room to stretch out.  It is also accessible to wheelchairs.

We continue our One-Section format, but we may go to 2 sections in the future.

Rob Roy volunteers with Coventry Park and Rec. Dept., the senior center, the local library and schools to recruit and train new chess players.
