Tournament Director Training Classes
NBCC is looking for more tournament directors. Becoming a TD is a great way to learn more about the rules of chess and help out the club with a much-needed service. Classes are conducted under the aegis of experienced tournament directors who helps clarify the more arcane chess rules.
Each student studies and presents one or more topics to the class.
1. Rules of chess
2. Swiss system pairings and procedures
3. Round-robin tournament
4. Prize allocation
5. Time controls and clock usage
6. Players rights and responsibilities
The club has purchased USCF Official Rules of Chess books. The cost is $20.00 for which you will be reimbursed after you direct a tournament. Contact the club if you are interested in participating. We typically have 2 sessions, after which you become a Club TD. Typically you would start to assist an experienced TD while you learn the “SwissSys” pairing software, and gradually take on more responsibility.

John Baclawski R.I.P. - Chess News from CT
Chess Community,
On behalf of the New Britain Chess Club, it is with a sad and heavy heart to hear about the passing of one of our veteran members, John Baclawski. John left this world on July 24, 2018, after a very long and courageous battle with cancer. John’s history with our family spanned nearly fifty years. Widely known for his fighting and energetic spirit on the chess board, John appropriately earned the nickname - “The Claw.” In the annals of the club, John ranked in the top ten players in overall major (G/30 or longer) tournament victories, his first one earned in 1979 and his last one in 2010. Even though John preferred competing in the slower time-controlled events, he was always up for a quick or blitz game with his buddies. John was a friendly man who exhibited kindness to everyone in our community. May he rest in eternal peace in heaven.

Look out for those back-rank mates, they can get anyone. Just a coincidence I suppose, but on the same day that a GOTW reader lost to a back rank attack, so did a grandmaster.

REPORT ON 2018 CONNECTICUT YANKEE OPEN
Nelson Castaneda of New Britain won clear first of the 2018 Connecticut Yankee Open chess tournament.
Nelson is a FIDE chess master, and a math professor at Central Conn. State Univ.
Joe Bihlmeyer, of Durham, won 2nd place. Joe, a national expert, conducts chess classes at New Britain Chess Club.
Special thanks to the OTIS LIBRARY CHESS CLUB IN NORWICH, from which we got six entrants.
Special thanks to the NEW BRITAIN CHESS CLUB from which we got four entrants. Two players came down from Massachusetts, and two came over from Rhode Island.
Special thanks to Nelson Castaneda for his donation of $40, without which we would not have covered all of our expenses.
Thanks to everyone for chipping in with all the work. Special mention goes to Suhas Kodali for lugging all my stuff back to my car. Lonnie Dixon helped with clean up.
Al Lasser took photos. Al also writes our GAME OF THE WEEK column for CONNECTICUT CHESS MAGAZINE.
We thank Wendy Rubin, Coventry parks and rec. director, and John Elsesser, the Coventry town manager. We all had fun at this new Mill Brook Place. Each of our players raved about how great a place it is.
THE 2018 NUTMEG STATE OPEN is our next meet on Sat., August 11. It is more than a mere chess tournament, but it is also an OPEN HOUSE for new chess players, where anybody can attend for free.
We now have plenty of extra room, so please come and "check" us out. No age restrictions. Info => ConnecticutChess@Gmail.com

ROB ROY, SENIOR TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR
Special thanks to Derek Meredith, who persuaded 5 fellow New Britain Chess Club players to come play in Coventry.
Bob Cyr, CT's chess historian, donated a dozen Dunkin Donuts. For lunch we had Angus Burgers and corn on the cob.
Next tournament is August 11 at Mill Brook Place, 1267 Main St. Coventry.
Since starting up Coventry Chess Club in May 2016, we've had 103 different players. We are confident our chess program will continue to thrive.
Mill Brook Place is a brand new meeting hall that fits 70 people. We will have plenty of room to stretch out. It is also accessible to wheelchairs.
We continue our One-Section format, but we may go to 2 sections in the future.
Rob Roy volunteers with Coventry Park and Rec. Dept., the senior center, the local library and schools to recruit and train new chess players.
