A group of 18 players gathered for the Gaetano Bompastore Get Well Quick in Agawam, Mass. Gaetano, who is one of the most active players in the Springfield, Mass/Hartford, Conn area was involved in a serious car accident on his way home from the NBCC Summer Open on August 26, 2018. After a long recovery, players from Massachusetts and Connecticut gathered at his rehab facility to celebrate Gaetano's comeback to rated chess. Suhas Kodali won the event with a score of 4,5-0,5.    Rating Report     Two photos at CSCA Website

GAME OF THE WEEK, by Alan Lasser

I’ve seen this a few times now. Someone who played as a child rediscovers chess via the internet. They play internet games and get internet ratings and eventually, I suppose they can’t help themselves, they wander into some chess club just to see what real human over-the-board chess is like. They have always wondered if someone can play real tactics without using a computer to cheat. Sometimes they see an actual trap spring into action. Apparently having satisfied his curiosity, this player hasn’t come back to the chess club since.

REPORT - 2019 CONSTITUTION STATE OPEN

3-way tie for first

Rick Bauer, Joe Bihlmeyer, and Jon Smucker, ended up in a 3-way tie for first place at the 2019 Constitution State Open held May 18 at the Coventry Chess Club. Each finished with two wins and a draw.

The event attracted five new players who have never played in Coventry.  Four from our Top 12 loyal players: Joe Bihlmeyer, Hayes Goodman, Larry Lafosse, and Art Nagel.

It was a gorgeous sunny day; the first nice Saturday since October. Rick Bauer donated $20. Joe Bihlmeyer and Jon Smucker donated $10 each. The donations enabled the tournament to finish in the black. Rob Roy volunteered as organizer and director. Thank you very much.

Our next event is June 22, the 2019 Coventry Summer Open

The Coventry Chess Club meets one Saturday per month at Mill Brook Place, 1267 Main St (Rt. 31). It is very comfortable, well-lit, quiet, air-conditioned, and is accessible to wheelchairs.

Please come play chess with us. We get together one Saturday per month, to provide a tournament for USCF players.

We also welcome players who are unable to pay to enter the tournament. Everyone is invited to come and be a spectator, plus they can also play non-tournament games.

Rob can setup free USCF-Rated matches. You must be a current USCF member.

We arrive at 9 AM and stay until 6 PM. Bring whatever equipment you have; we have loaner boards, chessmen, and clocks.

GAME OF THE WEEK, by Alan Lasser

The tripled pawns win! This is the eighth time that this counter-intuitive phenomena has appeared in this chess column. Every once in a while the tripled pawns appear to be good strategy. In this game they don’t arrive on the board until move twenty-four, but they control the center and pave the way to resignation.

CONNECTICUT CHESS TOURNAMENTS WITH ROB ROY TD

GAME OF THE WEEK, by Alan Lasser

In this complex variation of the King’s Gambit, the queen must fight to keep the White king from being chased across the board by a swarm of pieces. For many moves, the computer thinks the unbalanced position is mostly equal, until the king finally goes to the wrong square.

Coach Arslan, who is USCF Rated 2400, will be hosting a free chess simul at the Weston Library on Sunday, May 19th at 9am. A chess simul is where one player plays multiple players in multiple matches at one time.

For an example of a chess simul, you can check out Magnus Carlson (the current World Champion) in New York in 2016:

Here is the info you need to know:

1. The simul is open to the public, all ages.
2. To participate, you must be USCF rated below 2000.
3. There will be no clocks. When Coach Arslan gets to your game, you move or he moves on and comes back around.
4. You have to wait to move until he gets to your board.
5. You can not talk to others about your game while playing.

Please email me and Coach Arslan if you would like to participate! If you have friends that would like to come, please let us know too.

Respectfully,

Coach Dan

NEW BRITAIN CHESS CLUB WEEKLY NEWS by Norman Burtness

Training Class - Will Torres “Chess Prodigies” 6:15-7:00

Expert Will Torres will be lecturing on Chess Prodigies. This week he will present some games of Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa of India.

Team Tournament at CCFC 6/1/19

On June 1, Chess Club of Fairfield County will be having a team tournament. It will be 4 rounds with the avg team (4 players) rating under 2000. Click here for full details. See Joe Bihlmeyer, Suhas Kodali or email me if you would like to be on a team. No guarantees, but team tournaments can be pretty fun. There are rumors that my USATE team (Prawn Sacrifice) which won the best gimmick prize will get a photo in an upcoming issue of Chess Life magazine.

GAME OF THE WEEK, by Alan Lasser

So you want to be a grandmaster? If you’re up a pawn on move twenty-five, with two of them being connected and passed, wouldn't you think you had a chance against the world champion? It’s all an illusion of course, the two connected passed pawns are actually targets.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Any time I win a tournament it seems like I win a crucial game against a higher rated foe by employing the Bad Opening and exploiting the confusion. In this game, my opponent castles into my attack and I find the tactics.

NEW CHESS COACH - DAN STARBUCK PELLETIER

Coach Dan

GAME OF THE WEEK, by Alan Lasser

In this complex variation of the King’s Gambit, the queen must fight to keep the White king from being chased across the board by a swarm of pieces. For many moves, the computer thinks the unbalanced position is mostly equal, until the king finally goes to the wrong square.

GAME OF THE WEEK by Alan Lasser

In this complex variation of the King’s Gambit, the queen must fight to keep the White king from being chased across the board by a swarm of pieces. For many moves, the computer thinks the unbalanced position is mostly equal, until the king finally goes to the wrong square.
