If the object is to get out of the opening alive, there are Black defenses that can be played by White to use the extra tempo advantageously. The English Opening is sort of like playing the Sicilian Defense with a move in hand(English fanatics maintain that the English came first and it was so strong that players tried it a move behind, thus inventing the Sicilian; Sicilian fans think it was the other way around). Here a grandmaster plays the Philidor’s Defense with white pieces. It seems like it must be sound, but the Philidor’s is so conservative that even with an extra tempo it took some inaccuracies before White could work up an advantage.

On behalf of the club, the officers and I would like to wish all of our friends a healthy and happy New Year.

The Club will not be meeting on its usual days because Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Tuesday this year. We will instead meet on Wednesday for the next two weeks.

This Past Tuesday the NBCC had its annual Christmas Party followed by a bullet tournament. With 24 players and nearly 300 games played, Nelson Castaneda emerged victorious, just ahead of Jan van de Mortel. Doug Fiske won the “Best Game of the Year” contest, sponsored by Rick Bauer for a game played during his team’s impressive USATE team tournament performance. (NBCC will be sending several teams to USATE this year. Contact the club if you are interested in joining a team.)

Historian Bob Cyr has published the annual newsletter. It is posted on our website or can be read with the link, above. Many thanks to Bob for this outstanding work on behalf of the club.

What are the Odds? Wednesday, December 26, 2018

Total game time for the 2 players is 10 minutes, with no delay.

Players within 100 regular rating points of each other each get 5 minutes.

For each 100 pt difference, one minute is subtracted from the stronger player and given to the weaker player.

The player with less time gets the choice of what side the clock is on. Illegal move + press your clock = game over if called.

A player who knock pieces over must replace them on his time. To win on time you must claim the win.

If you claim the win while your clock is running, it must be before your own flag falls. This tournament is unrated.

NBCC Club Championship Play-in Tournament On Jan 8, 2019

The club championship tournament will be a 7-round Swiss tournament, featuring a new long time control of G/75+30. Scholastic players in the Candidates Section may opt for a quicker time control of G/60;d5. All players with a rating of Over 1800 automatically qualify for the Championship section.

A player rated under 1800 can qualify for the Championship Section by winning this Play-in Tournament. The top 1 (or 2 to create an even number of players) in this tournament will be entered into the Championship Section. All other players will automatically be entered in the Candidates Section.

You may enter on-line, by playing in either section of the Play-in Tournament or by registering by 6:45pm on Jan 15, 2019. Late registrants will be given a 1/2 pt bye and entered into the U1800 Section. There will be no cash prizes for the play-in tournament. 1st round seeding in the Championship Section will be determined by performance in the Play-in Tournament.
