Determination  Integrity  Growth

The Weston DIG Chess Team practices at the Weston Public Library on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. We are sponsored by the Friends of the Weston Library. We have three levels: (Players can be moved up an age group if they are ready)

Beginners: ages 6-8
Juniors: ages 8-11
Seniors: ages 12-18

We practice every weekend that the library is open. Players come when they can so there is no long term commitment. It’s $20 an hour per player. We also do individual lessons for $75 an hour. We offer scholarship for families that are in financial need. Classes are taught by me, Coach Dan and Coach Erin

Dan Starbuck Pelletier was born in Wilton, CT and moved to Louisville, KY when he was 9 years old. He competed in state and national chess competitions, along with playing soccer for top premier clubs in the Louisville area.

Here is the page for Weston on our website:

Weston DIG Chess Team 56 Norfield Road, Weston, CT 06883 Click here for our upcoming schedule. Cost: $40 per person for a two-hour group lesson $20 per person for a one-hour group lesson $75 per person per hour for an individual lesson.

We also have a couple tournaments coming up in Weston.

1/27/2019 – “2019 Nutmeg DIG Scholastic Tournament”

For tournaments, each person must have a US Chess Federation Membership

The “Lesson for Lesson” business model for DIG is that we match every paid lesson with a free lesson for a kid in economic need. Everything we do in Hartford, Bridgeport and South Norwalk is free. Our programs in Weston, Wilton and Wethersfield charge per player but we offer scholarships there too.

DIG Lesson for Lesson What is it? For every paid DIG chess or soccer lesson, a child in economic need can attend a DIG chess or soccer clinic for free. As of 9/7/18, DIG has provided 2,809 free lessons (1,576 chess and 1,233 soccer) and 1,190 paid lessons since 2016.

I hope that you are all enjoying the holidays and the snow. I wanted to share this game from 1997 at the World Open. It’s a quick game, only 27 moves, and most of the moves are explained by our friend from the New Britain Chess Club and FIDE Master, Rick Bauer:

This could be fun to look at while sitting inside, enjoying some warmth this Christmas.

Also, Rick Bauer will be doing a Simul at the North Branch Bridgeport Public Library in April. A Simul is where one player plays multiple games at a time with a number of other players. You will all be welcome to join that and try your luck agains Rick who has won the CT State Championship 6 times. This Simul will be done to raise awareness for our Bridgeport DIG Chess program which is free to the community and led by Coach Erin, Owen, Kelvin and Adam from the Weston DIG Chess Team.

Respectfully,

Coach Dan

New Britain Chess Club Weekly News Dec. 22, 2018

On behalf of the club, the officers and I would like to wish all of our friends a healthy and happy New Year.

The Club will not be meeting on its usual days because Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Tuesday this year. We will instead meet on Wednesday for the next two weeks.

This Past Tuesday the NBCC had its annual Christmas Party followed by a bullet tournament. With 24 players and nearly 300 games played, Nelson Castaneda emerged victorious, just ahead of Jan van de Mortel. Doug Fiske won the “Best Game of the Year” contest, sponsored by Rick Bauer for a game played during his team’s impressive USATE team tournament performance. (NBCC will be sending several teams to USATE this year. Contact the club if you are interested in joining a team.)

Historian Bob Cyr has published the annual newsletter. It is posted on our website or can be read with the link, above. Many thanks to Bob for this outstanding work on behalf of the club.

If the object is to get out of the opening alive, there are Black defenses that can be played by White to use the extra tempo advantageously. The English Opening is sort of like playing the Sicilian Defense with a move in hand(English fanatics maintain that the English came first and it was so strong that players tried it a move behind, thus inventing the Sicilian; Sicilian fans think it was the other way around). Here a grandmaster plays the Philidor’s Defense with white pieces. It seems like it must be sound, but the Philidor’s is so conservative that even with an extra tempo it took some inaccuracies before White could work up an advantage.

Training Classes - will not meet this week. Training Class will resume in the new year.

Total game time for the 2 players is 10 minutes, with no delay.

Players within 100 regular rating points of each other each get 5 minutes.

For each 100 pt difference, one minute is subtracted from the stronger player and given to the weaker player.

The player with less time gets the choice of what side the clock is on. Illegal move + press your clock = game over if called.

A player who knock pieces over must replace them on his time. To win on time you must claim the win.

If you claim the win while your clock is running, it must be before your own flag falls. This tournament is unrated.
